10/29/98...In loving memory of Dad

Hidden in the drawer, found by chance,
a heart-shaped locket, and at first glance
tarnished and dirty, forgotten I once wore it 'round
my neck....never out of sight, never touching the ground.

Taking it in hand, knowing what was in there
knowing emotions would soon be laid bare.
With shaky fingers and pounding heart
I opened the locket, hoping I wouldn't fall apart.

In the picture, a handsome man looking so young
holding a child listening to the song he'd always sung.
The child, a girl, her age around four
smiling up at him saying "Sing more, daddy, more".

With half smile on face, vision blurred by tears,
yet so vivid~ how he could dispel my fears.
I now wear the locket, when I need a sign,
gather it in both palms, to cherish this dad of mine.

What a tender tribute to an obviously great father.  My wife sometimes goes off on tangents about the faults of her father.  Admittedly he's not the best father in the world.  The one that would expect you to lose weight by telling you you've gained some and you looked better before.  That type.  But, he has always poured his heart out to her in his very personal gifts to her, just her.  Bracelets, necklaces, watches, etc.  He picks them out for her on his own.  When she was a little girl they'd go "Bumpin' Around" in the car together.  Just the two of them.  And they'd always stop to get her a special little gift.  A charm, a locket, some simple I love you and sorry I'm not perfect.  At times she gets so angry at him, and rightly so.  But no one could ever pry her precious gifts from her heart's grasp.  This poem touched me and reminded of my wife's childhood.

Thanks for sharing it.

Sweet, I wish I had had this kind of Dad. I do have a locket, that my Grandpa gave my Grandma, with a pic of him as a young man inside. This made me think of him.
