The newness of the garden growing And too few seeds for all the field sowing, Cautiously spread in the land There was none extra to sell or give And now many an extra hand; How could so little let them all live With many extra field now plowing. The valley now called him Master Cain, But he was just a farmer all the same That had survived drought and cold To make it through to the next spring Now with little food and little gold, His household now included Xing, But in his valley he had pledged to remain. So it came to Xing an important duty To go and represent him in the city, Buying for the valley what it would need To harvest in fall to last through the next winter, The many returning required more seed So Cain gave her the gold and sent her Back to the place he would never again see. Reluctantly she left the valley and Cain For the first time she rode the train To where her parents had fled the valley Leaving her behind with their strife In hopes of finding salvation in the city, Giving her only the hope of a slave’s life, Fleeing to promise while she did remain. A day and a night the train carried her With all his gold and a hand written letter To a businessman cousin of Cain she did go With the letter of potential agreement What it meant or said Xing did not know Trusting Cain and his good judgment That actions for him would make things better Cousin read the letter and ruefully shook his head Gave Xing dinner and a slave quarter’s bed, The place was warm and the pillow deep Nicer than any thing in Cain’s bare home, It was like a palace in which to sleep Quiet comfort that she had never known To a young woman that had been scantly fed. In the morning she was ushered in Breakfasting with Cain’s rich Cousin, Who smiling gave her a letter to return That promised the help to the valley, Something that Cain would be glad to learn And then she left for her return journey, But he also gave her a bag with two emeralds within. With bag and letter she boarded the train Returning to her place beside Master Cain. Gloom |

The most wonderful feeling took me over...that she returned from her mission. Too often we expect the opposite truth. Accolades Poet... Wonderful series TD |

Good for her -- and good for you! Does the story end here? |
