Behold The Pale Horse

Through these desperate fields
frought with desperate times
I ride on in staid comtempt.

Spurring my steed,
I thrust headlong
into this crimson tide
that beckons my fall.

With ravenous heart,
fury finds my hallowed stand
as hurried hoof delivers me
to he who calls my name.

Alone, I am but a man
who challenges the reaper
Take not a coward's breath
but come upon this dragon's fire

Behold the pale horse
with Death upon his back
brandishing his rapier high
delivered from this cruel night.

The mighty cob road crushed
under the pale horse hoof
as Death rushed upon me
with unbridled fury.

And, at the banks of Hades
my rapier met his armored breast
to fall him from on high.

From his back he leered at me
while his steed away did run.
Breath escaped his rampant lips
to death did death succumb?

Fear not the pale horse of Death
In battle nay he comes for the righteous soul
whose knee bends in deliverance
to He who reigns the stable.

Good write tonight, Kevo.  Have to wonder about what provokes these poems, though.   ....jo

I am a Civil War buff as you can tell from previous posts.  This was inspired by the character General "Stonewall" Jackson.  An Aide De Campe asked him how he remained so calm and collected throughout the battle to which he replied that God had already authored his death and the time of it and that if it was not that day he would not succumb to it.  If one understands that he may face battle as calmly as he would lay down to sleep.  This struck me as inspirational.  The poem suggests that I cheated death by not fearing it.  By accepting that if it's time, it's time.  By trusting Him (the keeper of the stable housing the Pale Horse) I put Death upon its back.  Get the idea?  It's a Revelations type of thing.  Hope I answered your question and appreciate your reply.

Sincerely,

Kevin

Kevin, I really kind of thought you were a civil war buff.  I have a friend here in Houston who is also.  I plan on sharing some of your poems with him (if you don't mind) over the course of time.  I much enjoy your writing skill and style.  Once again, I'll say it, you write as if you had seen it with your own eyes.   ....jo

Excellent imagery here Kev...
The emotions that must have tendered the minds of the courageous are well depicted in your choice of words.

It takes a historian of your nature to
adapt life to poetry...as well as death.

Well done, Sir...

Kevo -- par excellent.  You remind me much of a dear friend of mine who is steeped in the martial arts and history.  I would like very much to share your poems with him, yes?

Four words is all it took to give me the most flattering reply of all.  Four words that validate the most important reason I write.  Four words, conveyed a message I would have used a half a page for.  Thank you so much for making my night.

Kevin
