No Battle Plan

Grief is a breathing thing

Its soft pant drips drool
On moments that might be happy
The harsh, ragged gasp of it
Makes night something to dread

Its power isn’t a measure of love
But an accounting of the emptiness
That echoes with each beat of heart
When love leaves
And takes hope with it

Though it often introduces
This unwelcome companion
Death isn’t prerequisite
Any great loss allows its flourish

Gnawing on soul’s marrow
It fuels itself by feasting
On the energy and will
Needed to oust it

Thus insuring
Continued existence
Its sense of survival’s strong enough
To destroy that of its host

Tears are but one by-product

I know some have vanquished it
But how do I fill the gaping hole
When what I grieve
Is the me I thought I was

this is absolutely the best thing you have ever written...or if not best, its up there in your top 3...
the opening verse......wow.......and the follow through......whew...makes me glad my muse is quiet...can't match writing of this quality

oh...and lady...
if you are missing you? just ask me...I got a tight hold on your friendship

When your own emptiness is all thats getting through
There comes a point when youre not sure why youre still talking
I passed that point long ago

any time the moth is quiet tis a very good thing.

even better is when I'm made speechless by such an impressive, poignant write.

Suthern girl -- we're like the growth rings of a tree -- you're still there just another ring is starting.     (great write!)

Laura, this is masterful....this trio of poems has to be one of the best works I've seen in this site.

In the past you've shared with me the feeling that your poetry doesn't compare to that of the quality poets here.... Don't be saying that any more, Suthern gal -- you just proved you are one of them.

I'm putting this on #1 so anybody who starts reading can see what I think. I'm going to put the same words on the others too.

A poignant read, Suthern. To mourn what we once were, why, there's nothing that can bring the old us back, is there?

Wonderful writing. Off to read the other two.

suthern,
You caught me totally unprepared! I wish you peace.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

suthern,
This is an outstanding description of grief.  I hope you get beyond the actual feel of it, as I know it's not a pleasant place to be.  You are a wonderful person/poetess who brightens up many peoples' day.  You have brightened mine a number of times!  Feel better.
NOW it's off to the races!  I'm betting on NO.#2!  See you there soon.

The depth and the passion of this penning is remarkable~

You always learn things about yourself when you grieve...
at least I do.
Wish that did't hurt so much.

Don't know how you can take this and make it so perfect...
but you did!
And thank you.

Always, Alyssa
