Hunting Doves

Death comes easy in the night

a rustle
where the wind has freed a spirit

behind the street light it ripples
and turns the air to water
then as you turn to swim     back into air

Death comes while summer stalks the trees
watching the last blossom fall
tasting the small bitter fruit
riding faceless into dawn

I have stirred it with aproned arms of memory
curried until the thickness of it changes
to something foreign   yet familiar

I have tasted the compressed air
and the scrape of dignity   left  briefly there

How quietly it hides
behind the solid face of day
with just a push past my refusal
the battle already played

Such gentle weeping, so deeply and beautifully expressed in your unique way.   .....jo

Such emptiness in this....no need to know what happened, the flow of emotion in this poem carries everything before it....and if one does know.....

Oh God Martie, your imagery is just superb...

while summer stalks the trees

riding faceless into dawn

I have stirred it with aproned arms of memory

How quietly it hides
behind the solid face of day
with just a push past my refusal

In awe of you.

This is a tough subject to treat with both dignity and beauty, but you managed.  Well done.  KJ
