                    Two Leaves

They’ve turned the little bench toward the pond,
so it is level now, not leaning like before.
There are no tears today, and because there are
few tears he sees that nothing else has changed.

The leaves have grown with winter being past,
and the trees look deeper now, more thoughtful;
they let their branches dip a little lower than before
as if they’re lost in contemplation, thinking thoughts
of growing things he wouldn’t understand. There are
no tears, and because there are few tears he sees
these things and sees that nothing else has changed.
And the flowers. One flower is missing as she was before,
but nothing else has changed. Nothing of importance.

There are no tears, and because there are few tears
he notices the ducks, impatient in this early season,
tending to their own affairs, the redwing bird that turns
its head askance, wondering why he would be here
on a bench, watching the lawn of grass wave down
toward the water, wondering why he would look down
too and close his eyes here in the middle of the day.

There are no tears, and because there are few tears
he doesn’t fail to see the leaf that falls down spinning
from the greenbud tree, just as another lifts in the breeze.
They pass, intent on trading places, so it seems to him,
sitting here with no tears, and now while tears are few
he knows two leaves are saying it is time for him to go.

~~J

"nothing else has changed", could almost be a view of the world in general, good read James.

This is incredibly beautiful! *S* It has overtones of sadness, yes... but such insightful images... and they're depicted with a clarity that tears won't allow or would insist on blurring... so there's also strength and hope. *S*

Magnificent work!!

"to go..." and let go.
I've read this several times,
pretty much left with the profundity
of it all...
and yet, even though left fairly speechless
after each reading...

all I can say
is thank you
for writing.

And don't stop.

I really loved your first verse, and how the bench is level, not leaning!

There's alot to be said for this, it's such a very peaceful setting,  with no tears in the end.  Yes!!!

We try harder, don't we??

Fabulous writing, as always James_A~
