state of confusion

You tear holes in the textile of night,
tossing off star-filled comforters,
turning up lights to mimic day.
We awaken to stomp and explode sounds.
The foot of my bed is disturbed by your weight;
the cat jumps off and hides.

In frustration’s voice,
you blame threads of songs,
choruses that churn on an inner turntable:
stuck, broken, they skip and repeat.
I see protoplasm building up and tearing down
in the maddening pace of a changing boy.

Morning: we dissect last night’s sleeplessness,
place the blame on sugar. I toss ammonia sheets
into the washer; of this we do not speak.

The thirteenth birthday cake is cut into tiny pieces.
Only your sister gets seconds, eaten over the sink
so you won’t cry in envy.

I worry your brain is mixed up like mine –
that hostile jungle drums beat in you
as they do in me. On those nights, I know,
the sky is bereft of moon and stars
and the devil is a tune.

Sounds like a very difficult situation to deal with, especially when it is passed on from one to another to have to endure all over again through another’s eyes; and whys.

God Bless.
