A Cloud In The Heart Of Orion

You can still see blue between the stars,
fathoms of ultramarine with floating diamonds,
and in this quiet you can feel the shift
as cool pacific air draws in from the sea,
to find some comfort in the warmth of land.

Orion’s in uniform, the pale cloud of stars
hung at his belt as always, pressed and clean
until, as if by plan another wisp of white
fades in above those three straight stars.
Only a cloud, beginning just there, and it spreads,
takes slow shape, for a moment like a face,
then a dog I think, fat, precious, and now
it is a cloud again, fading, thinning, gone.

Forming, we say of a cloud, taking shape,
as if pure virgin water had been brought
forth, only to make a God-print on the sky.
It is not so. The water was already here,
part of the very air, and it is here yet.
It’s merely gone back to another form now,
cloud spirit, no longer corporal but just as real.
That’s how it is with spirit, here for a moment
or what seems forever, then gone but present still.

With instruments or eyes made for such things,
I could see the vapor even now, confirm
its existence with a scientific observation, easily
as my eyes see other spirits when I ask it of them.
But there is no need; I trust the water to be there
as water always is, transparent until some
slight and unseen change will bring it into view.
See, it’s back already; now Orion has a heart.

Great write!
Me too, I love to observe the clouds and interprete their forms. And stargazing too is part of the pleasure.

This concept has always interested me, too.
You said it so eloquently!

But the ending-stunning!

Incredible thoughts and skill...
Enjoyed,

I was smiling even before I opened this poem... thinking of all the times I've watched Orion rise over my Dad's house... he is so beautiful against the velvet blackness where there's no competition from man-made light sources. *S*

You can still see blue between the stars,
fathoms of ultramarine with floating diamonds,
and in this quiet you can feel the shift
as cool pacific air draws in from the sea,
to find some comfort in the warmth of land.

Then I started reading... and your images are more vivid than even the dearest memories. *S*

And this... It's just magnificent!!! If you'd written nothing else, I'd be clicking the library button. *S*

See, it’s back already; now Orion has a heart.

So does the poet. *S* Absolutely beautiful work!!

I got so lost in this before that I forgot to check the library box... I'm righting that omission now. *S*

I think your short poetry can't be topped.  And then I read a longer piece, like this one, and I change my mind again.

Different areas of the country offer different glimpses of nature...different aspects on nature; how varied our lives are if we only take a moment to look outside ourselves, as you have done.

Kudos, Poet.

You see with special eyes...it is a blessing to you, the poem, and the ones lucky enough to read it.
