We call her Dirty Face Discript of color, no disgrace She walks the pastures Of Pin Oak Place She, the leader of the club Mother of the hub, Came to farm when just a babe Since, generations of cows and calves have walked the instinct-driven paths to clockwork of shadows hand; Never changing, never straying Peacefully trailing (unless obstacle makes demand) Never such a sadder sight Than to see their loss in morning light after babes climb visiting ramp for a joggling little ride. Herd in fright. Mothers bawl and cry as stark as a paddle whacks against the silent sky. Every living thing sheds tears in ponderance why; Attentive Until the moos run hoarsely dry Dirty has outlived it all, extending her gentle forgiving call through the years and season’s Fall when calves first taken. Her aged bones creek now blatant... On Pin Oak Ridge she holds a special place Large pet, our good old Dirty Face; When her last breath comes, it will be her land on which to die no ramp to walk, just grace the sky. And in morning, our turn to cry. [This message has been edited by Sadelite (05-10-2004 08:46 PM).] |

Ah Sadie...I know of those ranchers who bear these very feelings... and you have caught the gist of it so very, very well. |

Thanks, Elan. It is something I never get used to. If one were to study cattle, they would see they're very much like people, but perhaps more humane. They're very loyal and nurturing. It is amusing to see how they even establish a babysitter to care for their young while grazing. Dirty Face has always been the established babysitter--kind of like the grandmother type in some societies. Thank you, Elan, for taking your time to respond. Sadie |

SadieLady~ This brought back so many childhood memories of working the farm with my great grandfather~ He used to *smile gently* at me and say, "Now little one, you can't fall in love with all of them." But, he knew I did~ Thank you for the nostalgic roam~ *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ ~*When the heart grieves over what it has lost, |

Dear Sadie, I am amazed at your sensitivity. You have got her under your skin, I would say. I have had many encounters with cows in the mountains back home in Switzerland, but I never really could establish a connection. Still, it was beautiful to watch when they went up to the Alps in summer with all their bells ringing .... Thank you for bringing back these memories with your highly captivating write. Love and hugs. Margherita |

Connections with cattle come when one is quiet, observing, patient. Then, of course, once the babe is born, they, too, experience mood swings... very protective, the mother; and very social, the herd. Grandmothers abound; and there are even bad mothers within herds...have the child, kick it away. Unwanted, it bawls until a willing surrogate mother takes it in, giving it suckle, and love, IF the surrogate determines that it is strong enough to survive... Amazing beasts, not dumb at all. And if a child is left behind? Humans step in, and bottle feed the babe all the way... sometimes we are successful, sometimes we are not. It's life. It's wonderful! |
