Legend of Green Eyes “Never trust a green-eyed girl.” So I’ve been told… The legend comes from a story that dates back to south-sea anglers of old. Legend has it that an island fisherman caught a mermaid fifty miles out at sea… She became entangled in his fishing net; she struggled, but could not get free… The fisherman realizing this strange event, Hurriedly pulled in his net - saving this woman was his purest intent… Wounded and weary she gave-in to the fisherman’s helping hands, What all this meant to the fisherman, he did not yet understand… Was this a woman, fish, or a creature from the depth of the sea? Truly puzzled the fisherman worked feverishly to set her free… The fisherman moved his new caught creature to his cabin below, In his eyes, she was the most beautiful red headed woman he had ever seen or known… She was silent, her eyelids closed, as if fast asleep, or maybe dead, The fisherman was not sure; he placed her on his berthing and a pillow beneath her head… The fisherman noticed two scales beneath the lids of her eyes, Slowly he raised one open and pulled off that scale, then the other to reveal her eyes… “Green Eyes!” the words fell from his lips slowly as if he had drunk too much rye, There in that moment he was mesmerized, he was motionless, in awe of her beauty, And the bewilderment of red hair, and of those devilishly beautiful green eyes… There he left her, overwhelming temptation, he sensed better against this flirtation… But those green eyes were alluring, infatuating indeed… This is the last entry to the old fisherman’s logbook: “I have become one with the sea. I am immersed between living and dead. God help me. God help me…” To this day from that time long ago, each ship has a name of it’s own Named stem to stern for that green-eyed girl and that fisherman of old. Carved deep into each bow there that portrait of a mermaid shall go… |
