Did It Have To Be This Way?

When I look at other faces
Lord, all I see is her
And nothing quite replaces
The way that we once were

Now the days are much too long
And my world's not the same
And though I never did you wrong
Girl, I'll still take the blame

But blinded by my tears, there are no shades of gray
You promised me tomorrow, but gave me yesterday
And though there's nothing I can do, and nothing I can say
I still can't help but wonder: Did it have to be this way?

I could've opened up my eyes
You could've opened up your heart
We could've tried to comprimise
Instead of pulling this apart

But now it's all too late
It looks as though you're gone
Girl, you let go of fate
But I'm still holding on

So blinded by my tears, there are no shades of gray
You promised me tomorrow, but gave me yesterday
And though there's nothing I can do, and nothing I can say
I still can't help but wonder: Did it have to be this way?

So now I'm all alone
But I'll still make you this one toast:
Girl, I wish you would've known
I always loved you most

And even though we've met the end
I still wish you all the best
You'll always be my friend
And I pray that you'll be blest

But the light is slowly fading.
Yes, the light is slowly fading...

And blinded by my tears, there are no shades of grey
You promised me tomorrow, but gave me yesterday
And though there's nothing I can do, and nothing I can say
I still can't help but wonder: Did it have to be...this way?

Great song Darker.

Don't know whetehr you'll get it in under four minutes with all the verses but it's a very good lyric all the same...Especically the chorus which I think would still be cool if you exchanged the first two lines with the last two.

And though there's nothing I can do, and nothing I can say
I still can't help but wonder: Did it have to be this way?
But blinded by my tears, there are no shades of gray
You promised me tomorrow, but gave me yesterday

All the way around this has a lot going for it.

Have a good writer's day!

Hmmm, Nashville anyone?  I can hear it on the radio now.  Very nice song.  Sad, but it's nice that though sorrowful, it is still magnanimous.
