Where no tyranny is tolerable

Pep Rally Gas

Dream at age ten
My roommate and I are on a hospital plane
High over the Brazilian Amazon.
A nurse brings each of us
Three glasses of water,
But I am not that thirsty.
I can somehow hear
The voices of people talking on the ground,
But in Spanish instead of Portuguese.
We land in a flowerbed near the jungle.
(I can only suppose that, at age ten,
I didn’t know what a flowerbed was
And that, unlike butterflies and bees,
Airplanes can’t land on flowerbeds
Because they’re too darn big.)
A group of scientists
Deplane and start preparing their experiment.
They seal themselves in an air-tight chamber,
Along with a tank of pep rally gas.
As the scientists begin their experiment,
The tank of pep rally gas begins to leak.
The scientist begin to panic,
Screaming and stamping,
Trying to smash their way out of the sealed chamber,
But they are trapped.
As the chamber fills with pep rally gas,
The sound of screaming and banging,
Mingles with movie-like dramatic music …
And then the bell rings.
And I awake, painfully homesick,
Back at the school for the blind,
Feeling utterly alone
In this indifferent, harsh and frightening place.
And when they say: Where’s your school spirit? …
Maybe it was in the gas …

Pep rally gas? OK, Jaime, did you eat something funky? LOL. You're right though, planes don't usually land in flower beds.

"where's your school spirit?

Hmmm that's always hard to find.

Ejoyed Jaime
