Guatemala 54
the voice of the voiceless was heard
Arbenz reclaimed the land, and the people
their livelihoods

Until the beast awoke
domination over compensation
demanded United
and Truman obliged

beneath 4 birds
the secret serpents were loosed
they slithered in from Nicaragua
they slithered in from Honduras

trained and armed by the CIA
Chiquita smiled
subjects safely underfoot
as democracy killed democracy

***In 1954 Jacobo Arbenz, the second legally elected leader under Guatemala's fledgling democracy,
was ousted from power in a coup by Col. Carlos C. Armas. However, documents declassified (though
heavily inked out) in 1997 revealed the coup was staged by the CIA under Truman's orders in order to
protect the interests of the United Fruit Company. The UFC was upset with Arbenz land reforms, which
expropriated unused land in order to give the land back to the people of Guatemala. Offered compensation
for the land, the UFC called in favours instead and the CIA trained and armed mercenaries to handle the
coup under US air support. The newly installed Col. Armas was trained at Fort Leavenworth, and under
his power all taxes on interest and dividends to foreign investors were eliminated giving UFC, best known
for Chiquita bananas, incredible profit and control over the entire region..

LOL, not the message, by the bottom sig.
And even though my Latin is nearly nonexistent, I think I understand the gist of it.
It's about time you paid a visit. Been really busy? Some of us missed you 'round this latitude/longitude.

It's sooo good to have you back here.

Ciao Raffaele, bentornato!

Your awareness of injustices perpetrated is so high and well you do to share it …. and with such poetic power!
