song of the albatross |

Her silhouette stands proudly upon the craggy cliffs, backdropped against small sage covered islands, overflown effortlessly by pelicans. Guiltless gulls fly overhead watching insignificant sailboats rock and roll precariously over white capped foam, tossed about in the rise and fall of crested peaks as the winged ones taunt and tease with nature's ease at the floundering humans below as they frantically cast glances of fear and doubt they'll get out of this storm alive. As if the gods should be bothered listening to their pitiful cries after yearly hearing a myriad of lies about how humans would be more careful in the future, how they would take better care of the waters of the Earth, the basic necessity for the survival of all life forces. And the gulls screech with raucous laughter as feeding pelicans swoop down wide mouthed, scooping the bounty of fish from the seas, while the hungry storm tossed humans bend, begging forgiveness and rescue. On the beaches, lowly crabs crawl slowly away clapping with glee at the prospect of the end of man... so full of himself in his carelessness, slovenly behavior, and incessant inhumanity. Upon the craggy cliffs above, the albatross smiles as she presents the gods with her nestling, the meek that may some day inherit the land, skies and seas. * edited/reposted, to coincide with a worldwide study on the plight of birds...and humanity* |

I think that is a wish We all know long 80 mile fishing lines are killing hundreds of thousands of feeding birds and I suppose the next is some nation will demand to carry on killing on the scientific grounds that they want to see how many they can kill Very good words Dave |

Grover, Margherita, Dave... Thanks for reading and commenting on this piece, as it remains a topic close to my heart. If we don't wake up soon? well, it really may be too late for this species anyway. Suggested reading? The End of Nature, written by Bill Mc Kibben, as well as all the new stuff posted by Earth Island Institute. Yes, Dave, whenever there is a $$to be made, you can bet the laws will be re-adjusted to suit someone's fat pocket. |

Kacy, unfortunately, you may be right about this if humanity does not WAKE UP from the dream it is in. Great, important poem! ........jo |
