She told the officer She was too pretty to be arrested, But she was anyway. Too pretty to see the judge, Too pretty for probation. No shrinking violet, this girl, She was too pretty to pass a drug test. She stood ultra close To her male Probation Officer Giving him free looks So he could fully appreciate How pretty she was. She worked in a strip club for tips And asked to work as an escort So she could pay court costs. This girl was just too pretty. Much too pretty For the needle marks on her arm. |

Isn't it strange... how the prettiest ones seemingly, sometimes, have no self-respect? You drew this out very well, Larry. |

Yes, everyone might as well know I am a Probation-Parole Officer in Missouri. This is about several young ladies on my caseload.... and yes, I am the male officer offered the free looks. |

Larry...Society puts so much value in how someone looks, that many young girls think that looks will buy happiness. It takes some hard lessons, like the one in your poem, to help them. I admire you for the work you do...as well as the sensitivity of this poem. |

We are all sinful by nature; some of us make very bad choices. Often this type of behaviour appears to be an easy lot in life, but in fact it is much more difficult than living and working in "Mainstream America"-- or Canada (in my case). I grew up with one such girl. She died from an overdose many years ago. I was an addict as well (we often shared the same needle)-- but for the grace of God there go I. I've been clean for 24 years. I believe you serve in an invaluable role and although you may actually never see anyone "straighten out" as a direct result of being on parole/probation you nevertheless can have a tangible impact on them in the long run. Even though it was years after I was on parole that I finally "got out" I can look back and see I was helped by my PO. Thanks for sharing with us! Grover. |

My hats off to you, Grover...I thank you for the inspiration you share...and the thought that I may be making more of change in people than I realize. |
