Riding the Greyhound (Sleeping in the Rear Seat - Part 1) When you’re sleeping on the rear seat of Big Grey Dog and a girl walks up and asks if she can sleep with you, it shakes up your world – you don’t know what to say, but say yes, because you don’t know what else to say. She lays there in your arms, the two of you barley fitting on the seat, breathing slow and deep in sleep, leaving you wide awake, unable to more than close your eyes, because you don’t know what else to do. She’s warm against you, soft – smells good, her hair tickling your nose – finally unable to stand it you laugh, she awakes pulls your arm tighter around her, and you lay there, quietly – not knowing what else to do, praying morning will stay away, stay away . . . forever, because you don’t know what else to wish for that might come true. Slowly, not knowing what else to do, you fall asleep, dreaming she’s laying in your arms, breathing slow and deep in sleep, leaving you wide awake, unable to more than close your eyes, because you don’t know what else to do. But sleep. wesley james beard, jr. (c) february 2004 |
