L.A. Nights (A Flaking Innocence) I crossed the street tonight, the emptiness of the city is filled only with the growl and whine of the Lady's blight. To and fro the cars speed on in an endlessly monotonous race: supplied by the thought, "To another place where I may live in peace." Here, a good cup of coffee enjoys the company of fresh newspaper, the smells rise and die with city toxicity. Telephone poles stand guard in the ward of another dangerous night in upended heaven. Keep your eyes ed and looking forward. That guard appears to be an empty cross, invisible arms outstretched in submission. Could this be the image of paradise lost? Listen closely and you can hear the ringing as the world decays from birth, stenches rise pungent from fear. Lend a bleeding eye to the street where old traversed paths lead a magnificent display of defeat. The perversity of the beauty around plods through borough and suburb, wallowing like a pig beaten down. This place is forgetable to be certain, this valley among the emerald crown, but sticks as a used needle in the veins. |
