The slate was wiped clean. The colour vanished in an instant, Its meaning flowing up towards the heavens. Never again to be seen. Lights flickered into action. Eyes gazed in wonder; a murmur of sound came instantly. The expectation of a show weighed heavily on my shoulders. I felt my heart and soul lose traction The stage was bare, Only me and the memory of the painting remained. Its grace and guidance lost forever. The very fabric of my life seemed to tear. Lost forever to me, Centre stage never felt so lonely. The wings held no support. Instinct cried out flee. I was alone, Left to fend for myself on the cold stage. Nothing to protect or prompt me in my performance. Tears came, and a slight moan. The show must go on, The memory still lived on inside me, As blood still ran in my veins. The show would go on. Sirens screamed, their images coming near. White coats moved around me in a blur as red and blue flashed. A wink, a smile, a kiss and I walked through the glass doors. Leaving the painting, I let go of the fear. I stepped out into the world again, But this time a little girl vanished, Lost to the world of womanhood. The show goes on. |
