helpless watching them drag you away gagged, bound in chains blood dripping down your chin, your hands they're afraid of anything different and you, my love, are different which is why they will tie you to the stake an artificial lamb to take the blame for their sins just like their savior. But their savior did not cry tears of blood did not crave the lover's throat nor spread himself thin and float like the moon. I hide in the shadows eyes glowing amber, a patient animal waiting for my opportunity to save you and it comes as the men lay the sticks at your feet, offerings laid at the altar. You're tied there, motionless head hanging down yet you still are aware wearing a crown of crusted blood on your head as you wait for me to save you. I rush forward, determined, fighting them off, but I find myself a captive as well, chained behind you on the other side of the stake. No bravery now, just a dead weight of a soul who has sinned over and over and lived for far too long. I grasp your hands and clutch them hard as they light the fire and the flames begin to grow. If we have to burn at least we do it together as it has been for hundreds of years. My love, my child, my greatest sin, hold my hand until the flames consume us and the earth cradles our dark ashes. |
