under the eaves
of the rose garden sea cottage
a nest of house sparrows
chitter and choke
on the smoke
of burning rafters.
the fire brigade of irish cousins
dressed in clown shoes
and whisky red noses
toss buckets of glitter
and wedding confetti
on to the smoldering embers.
four little birdies
with soft sooty down and
singed pin feathers
leap like bucket divers
into the geranium
filled window boxes
climb down the poison ivy
and run like lemmings
who fall from the sky
in stormy weather
to die in april grass
and the drowning sea.
