It’s impossible to paint the scene
as perfect as it was - a quiet morning
in the cathedral by the bay it’s rafters
cirrus clouds and soaring gulls above
the frozen sanctuary, the inlet where the sea
stills and turns to ice white as altar cloth
upon which rest the gifts, the winter birds, companions
through the darkest days and in this holy hour,
as if an easter sunrise, a flock of geese
returning.
