sunlight slants through this surreal early morning light reveal of dirty sidewalks rolled out in complete abandon save for nervous pigeons picking through the night debris and me sucking in this air that hangs stagnant and still dead fish and creosote swill not my drug of choice yet where are the red-lipped revelers with their booze and lusty laughter and no thought to morning after that now is here… the power train street machines you know the ones I mean their hot streaked taillights signals of party time gone I knew it was all a lie I just wanted it to be real boarded windows echo the blues of a saxophone playing out of tune, somewhere squeaking in time to the windblown Tony’s Tavern sign at 13th and Marine Drive as I shuffle by my worn out shoes slap a refrain in the cold and dismal morning rain I pull my hood up I put my thumb out my empty pockets will leave town somehow |
