It was a secret that she was mentally ill Her family hide it very well No friends were told It was a stigma A feeling that others could not understand The condition and fear the family as a whole They considered it a shame So her children kept it hidden Fearing within their own heart That others would think They might be like her With few friends and No one that they knew Could understand the pain That mental illness inflicted Upon the family The fearful feelings they felt Stayed within Their anxieties were never expressed They didn’t understand what was happening To their own mother So how could they expect others to understand Not even their own father could tell them why Their mother had changed He just said she was having a nervous breakdown Whatever that meant They didn’t know anyone else Who this had ever been said. As they got older they learned this was the kind of person Who was referred to as crazy Loco de la cabasa A person to be feared A person who was dangerous A person who could slash your throat Or throw themselves under a train Then they heard it was inherited It ran in families A train of fear A train that would go on and on Never far from their thoughts Would they too become like her? Estranged from their children In and out of mental hospitals A burden to those they loved. They knew what it had done to them So the fear continued…. But God was there in the beginning Until the end God was there holding them In the palm of his hand They survived and were stronger for it. |

that was amazing to read. after i got past the first line, i had chills and was teary eyed while reading to the end. i can relate so easily, dealing with a mental illness myself. though my parents are still in denial that i'm even sick. when i'm in hospital.. i'm just going there to rest they say. but i loved the read. it is quite expressionable. good job |
