Secret Woods “I have perceived only for the first time how much light there still was in that dusk.” - Vincent Van Gogh You told me that you kept a dog as your excuse for walking woods and meadows where wildflowers grew. You said it wasn’t seemly for a man to need as much as you the reassurance of winter’s end that hides within the first snowdrop. And how when bluebells laid down their azure carpet over April’s dreary dampness along the woodland path, you’d pause and let the dog off leash, presumably, to passers by, just to let it roam a bit while you, expressionless, to their eye, secretly enjoyed the bliss of green and blue . In summer meadows, clovered fields you memorized the shape and hue of every flower, counted up their number and painted them in watercolors against the winter’s darkness. It is a different season now shadows lengthen on the path, and though I fear the dusk of winter and grieve your absence, I have found in autumn light the secret of your secret woods. http://www.vggallery.com/painting/p_0008.htm |
