her cathedral a hollowed out tomb
of crumbling walls and shadowy niches
where saints once rested
in perpetual repose
with eyes gone cold as her heart of stone

her prayers and petitions
reek with the stench
of a heart incensed
with malice and vengeance
lip service paid to the holy rites
with sooty votives and rusted roses

an armful of lilies she lays at the feet
of her deposed martyr of the week
angrily sacrificed for her need to nudge
tear from dry eye to downy cheek

her ritual performed with hardly a hitch
she blesses herself and the muted choir
walks to the garden and places a flowerless rose
on each marble stone carved by her hands
