her cathedral a hollowed out tomb of crumbling walls and shadowy niches where saints once rested in perpetual repose with eyes gone cold as her heart of stone her prayers and petitions reek with the stench of a heart incensed with malice and vengeance lip service paid to the holy rites with sooty votives and rusted roses an armful of lilies she lays at the feet of her deposed martyr of the week angrily sacrificed for her need to nudge tear from dry eye to downy cheek her ritual performed with hardly a hitch she blesses herself and the muted choir walks to the garden and places a flowerless rose on each marble stone carved by her hands |
