The time thuds in Baghdad subside
for a second,
the space that usually crumbles beneath
continues, but an Iraqi sees his escape,
A blow hole into his long
forgotton Homeland studio.

He runs, and stops, and waits in a shop
picks his bottle up and smiles
A shop keeper asks for “cents”,
“in this land, still in mono!”
Fidgets
face up, looks down
agitates
shakes head, sense!
Skin crusts and hair growth
and grows and grows and grows.

Gazes round, head to the side
scratches head, eyes try to confide
A mouth opens wide, tries to speak
but just burps, a primeval gorilla
replaces him, history calls it storybook-
‘Angry Patriot Regressed into Banana Eating’,
the primates hand surrenders the bottle
SMASH, stares at glass for a moment
looks back, eyes crazy
backward rolls towards green and sanctuary
onlookers back off, confused looks as
manic screams echo against the trees.

The time thuds move back in
20 people dead,
no emergency
no flinch
hearts don’t skip beats,
just normality
and normal looks…
normal looks!
