i pick a few starbursts out of the big glass candy jar—the one that sits regally on the big wooden counter at the store—about half are yellow and the other half are pink i unwrap one—peel the bright-yellow logo-patterned skin off of the square (i guess it’s a square or maybe it’s a rectangular prism) of candy— bite off half of it chew the candy (thank god this one isn’t hard as a rock like they usually are) mindful of it’s taffyish consistency soon my mouth is filled with a familiar flavor that evokes a comforting feeling the sweet yellow lemon Lysol of the starburst bursts (no pun intended) throughout my mouth my yellow-stained tongue and sweet lemon-meringue breath linger to remind me of that one piece of candy |
