Titanic

So I sit
watching the inevitable;
she bound to a man
so bound to himself
that he cannot see her
yearning only for
the mate of her soul

There is another,
the match of her, with the feel
of a casual shape-shifter,
unbindable yet deeper
than ocean, deeper than hope;
their courses set to cross
and in the crossing meet
while the ship that is their world
slides on, bound reckless
to wreckage on a blinding night

All seems safe,
follow the course
as it bends to the curve
of the world, the straightest way
though not straight at all,
merely the easiest way around

It seems so easy, push for speed,
rush the predictable,
advance boldly into the known,
assume the unassumable
because it has always been
and press on

They meet at the coming of night,
lovers already as is their fate,
bound for a day of moments,
a moment of days when
there is beauty and release
and a future undefined, to be taken
with the stroke of a hand
through thinnest air

But it is a dream, true only
within itself, until the dark moment
of waking when all bonds break

And as in every such meeting,
the iceberg wins

Sometimes what seems to be inevitable isn't... and a collision is avoided, disaster averted... simply because someone shouted warning. I hope this ship finds warmer waters to sail in... and safety. *S*

Excellent write, my friend... as always. *S*

Yes, the berg is by definition already a loser, since it's on its way to the great meltdown and time is most definitely not on its side. So everybody loses. Do icebergs dream, I wonder?

Yes. *G* They're awfully susceptible to heat... and also to blows... so they have nightmares of warming trends and picks. *G*

I think I like this better than the movie!

Enjoyed reading this side of you,
and of course I'm a sucker when it comes to romance!

Fascinating spin you wrote.....

Ed,

Wonderful write...I loved the movie, but
I agree with Lori on this one...I might
have liked this more!

I like the metaphor, Rat.  It seems to say to me that often we get so caught up in ourselves that we imperil those around us, and open the way for somebody else to enter.  In doing that, there can be only loss on a Titanic scale.

As the berg moves toward the equator, is it melting?  Or, does it weep?

Ed...This touched me to tears, like the movie did

"They meet at the coming of night,

bound for a day of moments,
a moment of days when
there is beauty and release
and a future undefined, to be taken
with the stroke of a hand
through thinnest air"

Beautiful!

"There is another,

Reminds me of this stanza by Hardy...

"And as the smart ship grew
In stature, grace, and hue,
In shadowy silent distance grew the Iceberg too."
(Thomas Hardy "The covergence of the twain...1914)

Ratty:
For some reason I get the idea that this is not about a ship at all, but about a love affair....Maybe I am way off?
Anyway a most excellent read....well done, thank you...

I'll go with Sunshine on this one -- well-written and caught the heart of the show.

The movie's about a love affair -- I wrote this while it was showing last night on TV....My muse has been pretty quiet lately, so I tried reflecting things off the show. It kinda worked but I'm not entirely pleased with the result....

I especially liked this part.  It has a very pretty sound, gentle image, and flow about it.

All seems safe,
follow the course
as it bends to the curve
of the world,

(As I just read my comment, I could see Santa Claus
following those coarsers round the bends. I know that didn't have a thing to do with your poem, but when I isolated these words, Santa just appeared out of the blue sky!   It must be an omen!)

As always, I enjoyed your poem.

This was one of my favorite movies..it was so sad and yet romantic..I loved the music..I have the soundtrack....It was sad to know all those people died and that they now rest in their watery grave...so sad that two people meet, fate...find their true love and then have to live the rest of their lives without eachother!

Thanks for the poem~

the culmination of the God and Godess of twins tied forever to be one...one heart, soul and mind, through the emboidiment of a very special plan...if not in this world, then the next....

wonderfully written...with the perception of a seaman at heart...very much enjoyed...thank you for sharing and wishing you a very lovely Holiday Season.

Titanic was a great movie but this poem earned its own merits. The course of description is so vivid that one cannot help but pay tribute to the excellent work and narrative accomplished here. Thank you for sharing. Pat was right.
