Spring of ‘67 Drafted...to say “I do, I will.” Twenty Four hours of swaying rails west, through the desert, far from suburbia toward an ocean never seen by Hazel eyes. Wondering, worrying eyes. Pulled from a mother’s arms, as tears fell upon the dry earth. Warm, the breezes from ocean near, onto the harsh landscape of concrete flat upon the expanse as ships of war anchored lazily the harbor nearby. Days lingeringly long, followed by short nights beneath hand washed linen....Taps...followed too quickly by reveille ....scurrying rats in the maze of military make... Horrifying, that first day after night brought sleep to tired red eyes, eyes that darted too and fro in the darkness that shared only snores. Waking, pounding heart to the pounding sound of a messenger’s madness...waking the living....the dead rolling over in graves far beyond the eyes sight...reveille, just bittersweet moments, remembered as though the minute had just passed into a past. No tunes filtered through the scrubbed hallways of a concrete and brick camp where polish swirled upon leather until eyes could be seen glaring back.... Staring at the maker of this mirror, the owner of the image. ‘67, wet behind ears that seldom had been twisted or pinched... Old enough to fight, never having tasted the sweetness of love... A struggling boy becomes a struggling man...as war looms on the horizon for so many... Many flowers would grow this arid Spring...of '67 when boys grew up so fast. You cannot even begin to imagine the number of songs that started going through my mind... but then again, maybe you can. |

(big hugggsssssss) God Bless You, sweet friend, I know of how you and so many others somewhat felt during this haunting era and that should never have happened to all those boys just as it should never have happened now to all those in Iraq! (sad sigh) Seems too many are still growing up too fast and I pray for them all, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth |

Three years earlier, Barry, and that was me. All I thought of through boot camp was where the hell was John Wayne and Audie Murphy, the guys that made it look so glamourous!! LOL! You described it down to the last detail...big salute here ....and thank you, Barry, for your kind words in Announcements...mucho appreciado |

Dear Magnus, I remember coming home from highschool that season and year, to find my mother crying in the backyard. I asked her what was the matter, and her reply was heartwrenching...."they're sending our boys away again." I looked up at my father who was holding her hand, and his eyes were welling with tears. Your write brought all this back to me. Youth taken too fast.....too soon. hugs to you, Chris |

This is fine writing..evocative..capturing perfectly the period of time you were in.. and the mind images you experianced then....amazing what the photographic memory can bring forward from the dark receses of the mind and brain..after decades trapped among other images and thoughts..thank you for reaching back and bringing them to life again..after all they deserved to be heard..if only to illustrate the futility of war..these kind of writings should be set aside as a reminder to future generations..there is no glory in dying..no matter what the cause...thank you for your words.... Hi Barry. Well written sir. These are the images my father speaks of...when he speaks of them. Thank-you for the chance to peek into the unspoken. I was born in 64...so don't remember any of it myself. Remember, if you're not part of the future, you're history! |

I had to sneak a peek at this one at work today. Shhhh...don't tell anyone, but I couldn't resist. Barry, this was awesome writing. Since everyone else is declaring their age in 1966...I will too...I was 4. But I think you will remember I enjoy stories, sights, and sounds of that decade. This writing was no exception..very poignant emotions brought to life in your images. Very, very well done, my friend. Patricia |
