Oleander

It grew here from a wayward seed.
I let it, for the easy flowers it might give,
and it thanked me by poisoning the ground
until grass wouldn’t grow in its shadow.
I cut it but it grew again, took more,
turned this corner of the garden
to a thicket that I couldn’t enter.

Now I cut again, this time to end it.
Pulpy branches bleed white venom,
deadly sap that sticks and dries:
I could die by licking my own hand.
No way for a man to depart, licking himself.
And Oleander -- it kills the heart you know,
makes it forget why it beats, give up on living.

Some day if I’m diligent, kill every shoot
and gouge out every root I will be rid of it.
Perhaps it’s just a hope now, but some day
when sun and rain have washed the soil clean,
I’ll plant a rose.

Ed...I remember how my mother warned me not to touch the oleander in our yard...This can be read on many levels.  Well done, as always!

I'm sure you've seen the areas further north, where the counties and towns plant them in the divider lanes - I once wondered if a person had an accident and were to lay bleeding among the bushes...that the sap of the broken oleander wouldn't do him in, anyway...

But they do bloom such deviously beautiful flowers...

Ed, this is a wonderful write.  You had me from the beginning and I couldn't let go.  Call me ignorant (you wouldn't be the first) LOL, but I didn't know anything about Oleander.  Although after reading this, I do believe I know some folks who should have been named Oleander.  Ooops, did I just write that?

Just wonderful, Ed!

(big hugggsssssss) Oleander truly is the devil with a white veil, just like jimson weed is pretty on the outside but is deceptional beauty! (sad sigh) This is powerful, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ed, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Ed, I agree with Martie...this could be read on many levels. But, talking about the plant and seeds taking over, have you ever had a wisteria vine that wasn't kept trimmed back? OMG, those vines take over a yard. I love the flowers that grow on the vine, but hate the vine!!

A good write, my friend...it had me thinking on many levels...on more subjects than just the wisteria vine that I mentioned!!  LOL

Hugs
Ethel

Reading only literally, I couldn't help but smile at the thought that I'd once wanted oleanders in my wedding bouquet... turns out they would have been an appropriate foreshadowing. *S*

But to read this only on the surface is to do it injustice... I'm now on my 4th read and absorb more every time. This is superb, my friend.

Ed~
Oh yes ... I have known this plant ... deviously deceitful in the beauty of the flower~

And this -

'I could die by licking my own hand.
No way for a man to depart, licking himself.
And Oleander -- it kills the heart you know,
makes it forget why it beats, give up on living.'

- is just plain brilliant~

I couldn't agree more with everything that has been said!  Well, penned--probably wish it were well pinned (this plant, I mean!)
Enjoyed...
