Comes 3 AM
And eyes used to prying themselves
Two time zones removed
from slumber
To the fractured half lit views
Of watery iris
Not yet able to focus
Practice the art of deception
By making believe they cannot change
As easily as clocks in an adjustment
Of travel.

3AM is an in between

Those in the restaurant are stoned
Or last ditch desperate to find solace
From a night of paid pleasure
Or too little sleep

The machines never stop
Infernal chime hammers away at silence
Refusing the ear reprieve
But chasing thoughts away
So that come 3:30
You can’t hear the voices
Inside
Whispering

And 4:30 doesn’t cry it tears
It just hums from too much booze
Too little sleep
And wheels…
That turn on themselves
Trying to line up in kind
And as if magic
Provide the illusion

It’s all fun

The unlucky ones
Sit in the side booths
Head in hands as sleep tries to salve
The wounds of struck out
Got rolled
                  What did I do?

Towards the back
Are the girls
Eating steak and eggs
To wash the taste of the last job
Out of their mouth and to do a head count

Of is anyone lost
Miscounted some discount the lies

And hard glazed fractures craze eyes

Once thought pretty

“coffee”
Is all I can order

The rest turned my appetite inward
And this napkin has to do
As words spill ugly
On white

Come 3:30
On this Lost Vegas Night

She believes that life is made up of all that you're used to
And the clock on the wall has been stuck at three for days and days

And she says baby ...
It's 3am I must be lonely
When she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
Says the rain's gonna wash away I believe it

when I went through Vegas
it was daylight, 1970
laws were still enforced then
and the doors to dark places
where musical chimes clanged
their beckoning noises

and I held back,

aware, unwary,
too young to know another's pain
at the crack of a card
or in the crease of sullen eyes

Wow...what memories you brought back of the brief moment I drove through Vegas, and stopped for a cold drink....Pepsi, that was....

3 am is the best time to see humans true nature...

Next time how about an alliteration?  I know how you love them...

"if you won't let me fall for you
then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you"

(smiles) This too felt like it was inspired by matchbox twenty's "3 A.M" somehow to me too! (big hugggssssssss) I am up at that hour more than one may think, God Bless You, and...

"maybe, maybe, maybe,
you may find something that will keep you,
but if the bright lights don't receive you,
you should turn yourself around and come on home..."

May love and light always shine upon you!

Painted this darkly in spite of all the lights.  I'm impressed, but then I'm always impressed with the clearness of your images in my head...

This is a dark one - probably the darkest I've read of your work.
