Kenneth Patchen

I didn't know when he died.

Hell, I didn't know when he lived.
I found him once, followed distant through
the coal bitten streets as far as I
went, thought I saw him
thought I followed, lost him in the crowd.

Then forgot him until now.

You'll like him, Ink -- he a tough guy, but one with heart. One of the Beat Poets.

Hi Sunshine....I used to worship the guy's work, and never knew that he died just three years after I discovered him.... Always thought it a wonder that somebody who lived in constant pain from Meningitis could produce quality poetry, or any poetry for that matter.... little did I know! I was trying to ape his style in this one....

This is excellent... and intriguing. *S* I'll be visiting the library tomorrow to remedy one lack in my poetic education. *S*

Your poem makes me think of the many things that seem to consume us at one point in our lives... only to be forgotten for years... and then rediscovered somewhere along the line. *S* I like it very much... can't wait to read the inspiration. *S*

Ed,  As you know Kenneth Patchen was/is my favorite.  In fact I believe I
introduced you two.   Hope everyone else finds him also!      In fact, here are two books
that are A MUST:     Kenneth Patchen Selected Poems and........
A Coney Island Of The Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
Ok...here is a Patchen poem:

Pastoral

The dove walks with sticky feet
Upon the green crowns of the almond tree,
It's feathers smeared over the warmth like honey
That drips down lazily down into the shadow....

Anyone standing in that orchard,
So filled with peace and sleep,
Would hardly have noticed the hill nearby
With it's three strange wooden arms
Lifted above a throng of motionless people,
...above the helmets of Pilate's soldiers
Flashing like silver teeth in the sun.

I came back from the library with an armload! *G* Found both of dingusjr's recommendations, several others that followed me up to the checkout desk... and one mystery that has GOT to wonder how it fell in with that crowd! LOL

I can't wait... thank you! *S*
