Sam at two

sits with a tiny apple she picked in one hand
and fish food in the other
calling the cat

kitty kitty comes
a loyal subject to her whim
rubbing black fur
until she laughs the jump

On the porch swing of creak and song
she is the princess of the yard's wealth
she hears the leaves behind her
sees past the air to the sound

and rules a place in my heart as well
