What Could Be

this morning I
quietly came in
from a work day
that felt like three
turned the water on
full blast and steaming
and poured a little
soda in a place
I had hoped would
neutralize me
tucked myself under
clear ripples of comfort
to emerge to something
that sounded like
a voice
dripping and terried
looking for the source
nothing no nothing
(but I already
knew that)
figured it was
an echo
left over from
another time
caught here
bouncing off walls
of rooms that
sleeps one
leaving the secrets
in the closet
I struggled with
my pajamas
and settled into
what is
not what could be

I don't know why, but these words came to mind. Sometimes one foot in front of the other becomes a leap of faith. It is like that sometimes. Not easy to be there.
