When You Are No More

How easy it was, there as we checked them out
boxed with embossing, stained, unstained, shellaced and dull,
as life goes out the window and you are staring into darkness,
the end of time... planning it, how it will be when you aren't.

How easy it was for me to sit there with her,
twenty-five years older than I, my mother
talking to a stranger-soon-to-be-friend,
about services and contracts
as if she were ordering new furniture
and a day out on the town.

I actually was relieved, to sit there
and see her so strong, making decisions,
joking, even though I know inside
she was worried and anxious
about the other daughter, the one sitting home
waiting for me to come and tell her it was done,
easing her mind, leaving me with a hug and a whispered voice
thanking me, that she has one less visit
to make there.

M

you know..... I'm just going to say it brought back memories of a visit I made with my mother...and I know how it left a lot of things in my mind to think about..

Oh goodness,  M. this is one of your most
powerful writes.  Touching is a true understatement.

So true to life,  I understand it all.

Hi Ron...it sure was an interesting day.

Sometimes I wish I were more like my mother..haaaaa how many daughters ever say that ??!!
sighing~~

Good evening Barry, true to life and one set of arrangements almost out of the way.
I couldn't see my sister worrying about the future of my mother's, when she will probably have to make her own before...

Strange how calm and easy today was...
Thanks for reading and your caring responses.

It makes  each day easier somehow, knowing I am not always alone.

You are never alone Maureen...
I so much appreciate your writing.
Not always having the chance to reply..
I want you to know that I do read what you pen.
A sad day for you I'm sure...I've been there.
