they exist now players revolving in plastic primary colors on game boards come and go existence within the perimeters of their mind there is no more free choice they are pawns of a cruel joker the clock appears a white face cherub as it brings them to a rest stop they hang between stages of decay and death for a while life is not an option anymore tho they are closer to god than a sunday congregation they are flocks of geese abandonned on the roadside by their own selves Alzheimer is the great equilizer of actors, politicians and janitors men sitting in diapers talking jibberish to themselves castrated at the mercy of caretakeers this one is circling round market street shopping at the butchers she is frantic at the elvator that smells like instituitionalized cooking fearful she missed the bus and wont cook a brisket for the holiday dinner 3 men in wheelchairs sitting at a window the size of a movie screen watch the trafic light turn from red to green and back again and again, they laugh like silent screen slapstick players, upon each flash of neon a private game they seem to have developed themselves and heres dad the new kid on the block sterilized, sanitized, compartmentized, theyre moving him in, dad, the dreamer, dad the workaholic dad the great provider dad the man who taught his beachbaby girls how to swim and worship the ocean dad who caused mom more heartbreak in a lifetime than any saint of a woman should bear dad in daipers clutching a beany baby waiting for the icream man to bring him a chocolate frappe is just at the starting point of this absurd state of suspension in gods air kiss me goodnight daddy love always your little girl michele [This message has been edited by inkedgoddess (10-09-2003 11:27 PM).] |

I'm personally touched by this poem and my own dealings with my own father at this time. Understood (to a degree) and appreciated as well. Very well-thought and much to comprehend. wonderful writing. |

Michelle, this is not what I expected to open up. This is such a touching and compassionate write, my friend. I don't personally know anyone who has this illness, but my parents are getting old. I worry about them a lot. My Mom has fell twice in the last month, and doesn't want to use a walker or anything. If this was your Dad you were speaking of, I do wish you strength and well wishes. Hugs to you, lady ![]() Ethel |

Michele, I can not even begin to fathom how hard that was to write...not that the words came hard but rather the emotions with the words were hard.. You wrote it well...I am deeply moved. Susan |
