Hunting Nutria With Serenity
By Paul Wilson

The weather was getting right
So I placed a call tonight
My hunting buddy said hello
Then we planned a hunt yanno

The hunt was set for Saturday
Since we both could get away
We would meet about nine
You bring the smoke I’ll bring the wine

As the time for our hunt grows near
Thursday we got together to share a beer
I told her not too be late
Serenity…yanno those Nutria don’t wait

She told me goodbye…not too fear
We would meet at the camp at eight and have a beer
Saturday morning we made groceries at the local store
I went by the boat and gassed it up for sure

That afternoon the clouds began to rain
I called Serenity and said we must be insane
To go hunting in this weather we might drown
She told me don’t worry…with a frown

The hunt was still on those Nutria’s we must kill
For everyone you shoot you get a five dollar bill
I packed up the truck and headed to the camp
Caught a flat tire on the highway 23 down ramp

Just when I arrived a half hour late
Serenity was standing there mad as hell but looking great
Wearing white rubber boots and a bulls eye on her head
Slow down girl those Nutria will have to wait I said

We have one more hunting partner yet to show
Who the hell is that she said…is it someone I know?
I said yes he is a friend of you and me
It’s that sheriff from Jefferson Parish Harry Lee

Senerity gave me that look...yanno
Like she wanted to tell me where to go
She packed up her gear...and said I'm outta here
Damn if I'm hunting Nutria with a four hundred pound chinaman drinking beer

FYI   Nutria "A rodent that eats roots of plants"

FYI   Harry Lee is a local sherriff from around New Orleans that offered to pay $5.00 for each Nutria killed, because they are eating away the roots of plants along the waterways of the parish in which he is sherriff, thus causing errosion.

OH PAULIE!!!

come here you!

I needed this laugh so much tonight--er..this morning!

but I don't think I could join you on that trip--was a time tho, I could have...but then? I met "Henri"--Henri was a pet nutria a friend of mine had, and I'll be damned if that rat wasn't CUTE--took a liking to me, he did, and he would curl up in my lap while I watched tv. I would eat the popcorn and feed him the unpopped kernels of corn.

I even grew fond of his orange-toothed smile.

I DO make some unlikely friends.

Thank you so much lovely Paul.

You are a gift.

(giggles in delight) Oh Paul, I had no clue what nutria was until the end and I assumed it was real hunting you were doing with Karen, then at the end finally the laughter came, hehehe! (smiles) Yep, bye bye to nutria, yay, this is such a wonderful story, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Paul, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Serenity...Glad I could make you laugh a little this morning. So what happened to Henri? I hope Harry didn't get to him...LOL
This seems like it may need to be continued.
We will see. Thanks for the reply...Paul

passing shadows...Thanks for taking time to read. Hope you liked it...Paul

Noah...Hi Noah, it's been awhile. I hope all is well with you.
Those pesky Nutria are a real pain down here in South Louisiana. Seems like someone imported them many years ago from another country and they multiply like rabbits.
Glad you could see a little humor in this. Thanks dear friend for reading and your reply...Paul

Paul...I loved this...clever and smile making poem.  Just how do you kill a Nutria anyway?  Trap with cheese?  And do you have to take the body to the sheriff to get your $5.00?  Just wondering...not planning a trip.

How to kill a nutria? Well, because they are such a pest here in La., shooting them is generally encouraged, although poisoned baits have also been used, but that method does tend to endanger other animals as well.

They are kind of startling to see, because they do rather resemble huge rats, but their teeth is what always freaked me out. Huge, orange teeth.

As I said above, the things terrified me until I met "Henri"--and discovered that the nutria is generally a social critter and has a rather sweet disposition. Nutria fur never did quite catch on, but nutria IS offered on the menu somewhat routinely here in South La. (and yes, I have tried it, but considered it a bit chewy for my taste) tho nutria sausage is a bit more palatable in my opinion. But again, that was before "Henri."

And Paulie?  I assume Henri is still with his keeper, an x boyfriend who turned to be the TRUE rat. Hmmm...I wonder how much Harry Lee would pay for HIS hide?

and here is some info on the nutria as a domesticated pet:

Oh yeah. Sonovagun we have big fun on da bayou.

Bill...Thank you sir for enjoying.I have to pick on Serenity a little to let her know I'm thinking about her now and then.

Nancy...So glad you like my little ditty about Serenity. She needs a little ribbing every now and then. Thanks a bunch for reading & your sweet reply...Paul

Martie...There are a few ways you can kill them, either catch them in a really big trap, shoot them which is the preferred way and then there is the Serenity way, she gets them drunk and they run in a circle chasing their tail till they fall over dead. The local sherriff has a special account set up to pay you for them and somtime I believe they serve them at the local jails & prison to the inmates so the state can save money. I'm told they taste like chicken when fried.
Thanks for being brave and asking all those questions. Glad you enjoyed...Paul

Fortunately, Paulie, they don't need much to get drunk. That leaves more for me.

(How else do you think I'd be brave enough to try eating that stuff?)

Love ya, my coon ass buddy.

Susan...I will try and come up with something real soon, as long as the subject of my next episode doesn't get offended.
That E must have meant expert markswoman I assume. Glad you came back and read the new revised version. Thanks...Paul
