Still Lifes Most mornings, I walk around the lake, greeting the retired folk – they have time now to watch ducks duck and to search for turtles along the rocky banks. I wonder why I’m here. They stop along the way to speak to one another – I hear snippets about their sons, daughters and grandchildren. My favorite: a sweet child in an aged body. She wears a straw hat over once-blond hair and the same stained white tee-shirt every day. When she smiles her hello, her face crinkles up in perfect innocence. It’s a calm time. I wear it like summer – light as the sky. Even the weather has turned: a temporary spring in August. I belong to this brief respite. Somehow, I do. At the bend of the lake, halfway point, a man fly fishes. I listen to the whip-whip of his line and wish I could sit with him; instead I begin to jog. The lake speeds by. © 2003 Core |

Corrine, this really is a touching poem. Some of these people are so lonesome, but some are happy with just their memories. Hugs Ethel |

I really enjoyed this. I have no elderly people in my life now (oh my god..maybe because I AM one..) and I miss it. I miss the volunteer work at the rest home...I miss having a Grandpa and Grandma...sigh..I'm sorry, your writing wasn't sad...lol...leave it to me...I loved it, it was refreshing and lovely... As I live and breathe....it's YOU. I saw your name elsewhere but assumed mere coincidence. Anyway, nicely done, Corinne. Bob |
