Seeds

The fragrance of parched leaves lies heavily
upon the wind as I slouch in a lawn
chair and take in summer's last hurrah. This
is my favorite time of the year, for a
kaleidoscope of colors is dappled
upon the leaves of the hardwoods, and the
humidity of summer has given
way to the invigorating crispness
of fall. The amicable sunshine that now
caresses my face discharges a pledge
of the spring that is to come next year. I
acknowledge that promise and safeguard it
within my heart. "You've given your word," I
murmur quietly in my mind, "and I will
hold you to it next year my friend." But Sol
only seems to shimmer brighter as if
in response to my whisper. There once was
an age when I thought of fall as the time
of passing away. The verdant greens and
emeralds of summer had given way to
browns and chestnuts, and everywhere I dared
to cast my eye all I could see was death.
That however has changed. New insight was
given to me through one diminutive
seed. This is a time of birth. After a
drawn-out pregnancy Mother Nature's young
are ready to be born. Grain's, kernels, bulbs,
and tubers. Call them what you will, without
seeds there would be no new-sprung existence.
Each spring the earth would remain a barren
wasteland of chocolate browns, and our own
livelihoods would come to an end. In these
tiny vessels there's the genetic code
to birth a fresh generation of growth.
A gentle wind rustle's the branches of
the standing timber by which I lounge, and
pin wheeling slowly to the earth there falls
a lone maple seed. Smiling, as if
the porter of some greater perception,
I arise to my feet and collect it
up. From so unassuming a start sprang
forth his mother thirty years ago. I
recall the day that I planted her seed.
I think the west side of the house needs shade.

This is beautiful, EV, autumn is my favorite season, so full of color and cool breezes - piles of leaves, windbreakers, I wish that part of my year lasted longer. I enjoyed this, you have a wonderful way with words, poet.

Thank-you Wind, froggy, and MorninGlory. I am really glad you three ladies enjoyed the poem. This is probably one of my own personal favorites.
