Etched in the illusion of time

0 posted 2003-09-12 08:09 PM

why
she never was to trace
messages
in windows painted by icy breaths
some quiet secret to the world

never felt the coolness of panes
'gainst pallid cheek
wine glass in hand
waiting for winter to pass her by
melt into spring

it never comes in Carolina

love stays for centuries
blended twixt the veins of summer
as it bleeds into
autumn
so subtle in change
only the trees sense
such sweetly tragic variance

she spills herself onto the earth
silvered with the moonlit
isle
isochronal murmurs spun
into
its greenery and black
legends

the moon never dies in Carolina

her home
is in his eyes
rimmed with the ambiguities
she never knew
never cared to see
perception etched in every line of umber

oh, the way..
the way death savors life's defeat
her eulogy of poignancy

satisfied how the rarefaction
of spiced and lightless air
fills her with alcoholic rarity of intoxication
undrunk
yet enough bitterness to keep her lips alive

still warmly chilled from balmy solitude

she remembers those nights
lost in a garden of orchid dreams
bodies stained with their tears
and incensed
by the mists of fading passion

her sighs loom one hundred stars
to her palms

held
the sky in prayer

memories grasp him with tired fingers
weakened strings
of patience

fraying.

how she begs the sun to never rise in Carolina
though she knows it always will..

For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.--"Romeo and Juliet"

Dang, but this one is so beautifully written. The imagery and word choice...HMM, a sad but dreamy feeling followed me from line-to-line.
I'm keeping it, to read again later, with a glass of wine in a quieter moment.

IndigoEve, this is a beautiful poem. I'm
sending it to the top so maybe more will
happen to see it.
