Who Can Fasten the Meaning of Time?

I thought I knew the secret of time
when I saw it falling down the ridge
carrying Michelle’s ashes with the color of fall.
I thought I knew a lot of things
standing on that ridge, as if on the edge
of time itself.  I could feel all those sweet memories, like the soft veil of fog
that touched the edge of vision,
cool against my face and knew
that the summer was gone like lace curtains
open through the night,
and I thought that this minute
was all I had, but I was wrong.

Now I know that time is more complicated
then I ever knew.  I have been taken in by it,
as if it was something steady
that would always be true,
but it moves in me
in ways that frighten and delight,
back to places never been,
even into someone else’s night.

Time has moved too fast
to fasten the meaning
of a look of love, too fast
to be sure that tomorrow
would be a place that look would endure,
and it has stopped while I sent my spirit soaring
and patiently waited while I watched
the beauty of touching another’s glory,
then ticked so quickly by the dreams of night
while slowly keeping those
that sleep would not become.

I thought I knew the secret of time
but I do not,
each day mocks me with a different clock
and given joy and fear and love,
is ever changing and widening the view.

Time takes this day, Sept 11,
and brings it back to clear
the falling of what was into chaos tears and fear,
and though two years have passed
the ground is fresh,
with the fragile bones of life
that felt the blast of time that will forever stay
in memory, in color flashed,
time can erase some things, but never that.

Oh my...

No, Martie...never that.  This just weeps...

Oh my dear,
How well you have spoken of this intangible and soul based ache.
There are these blessings that come to us, and hover until we can embrace them...and for that fragment, our path is to love and learn.
Always so impressed by you. TD

MartieSis~
That time could hold such fragility
and yet such strength
in the same hands-of-sweep
is reason enough for these tears we weep~

This is beautiful ... you are beautiful~
I love you~

Wonderful poem Martie. Who Can Fasten the Meaning of Time? All who remember. I really liked this piece. It did not blare or rehash history as so many poems about 9/11 do...instead it was a slow introduction with a reserved glimpse of insight seated right at the end. This made it special. Thank-you ever so much.

Martie...This is a precious gift, and reminder of those days that will live in our hearts forever.   You never miss a beat dear lady.  I know this may sound cliche, but your poem rings with love and truth, like whom the bell tolls for that comforts us all.

Only you could take three themes that seem to be so different, and weave them into a single cloth.

It's time for each of those feelings, time for our lives to be affected by such things. You've shown us that in reality those things are all part of the same pattern of life, a pattern that may be changed now, but goes on and on just as before.

Who can fasten? You can make it hold still if anyone can.... Your poetry gets deeper and deeper, and more beautiful as it goes. See, time has an effect on you, too -- a good one!
