Deep in my mind it can be any time From a moment ago to many years, So in an old thought memory will find A place long before the shedding of tears. I was a boy visiting the country And the general store was a long walk Not like on the corner in the city It was miles away and we got to talk He the youngest I the youngest also Both different with several years between He knew the dirt road and which way to go As we took shortcuts through the fields of green We paused beside the roadway we had walked We paused within the conversation talked Not in a hurry silent for a time Sweating beneath a summer sun that sears I enjoyed the peacefulness of country I was slightly tired from the long walk And we took a drink from the nearby stream, Hidden so only explorers might know. That was something I had found out that day, We were explorers in a different way, Finding places that others could not know Because they were in a hurry to go And didn’t care to pause and look for more Couldn’t find the time to pause and explore. Gloom In memory of Scott, my first cousin |
