Take a number. Strike a pose. There behind the yellow line. Cross your arms. Suppress the yawn. Find interest in the concrete walls. Bird nest ceiling fascinates-- the cooler is too far away. The Young and Restless have their say-- "Stay tuned to catch the News at Noon." Examining the backs of heads of those impatient-wait ahead-- and how his belt is fastened loose-- he'd forgotten the back loops of his stone-washed jeans... in his haste to wait in line I saw him twice check watch for time-- estimation of the cost-- receipt contained within his smile lit only when he said "hello" into the cellphone shield. Recently, I have begun to wonder if there might be a public health use of cell phones. In any urban area, as well as some other areas, it has become common to see a few street people who walk around talking to themselves, or talking to god, or to the angels, or dead companions, whatever...and most often apparently they are hearing some response. Often, they are shunned or treated badly by the general population in part because of this activity of clearly talking to somone who is not there. Why not give them cell phones; the phones don't have to work really. All that would be necessary would be for the deranged to think they work, and then they could continue to walk around talking to their imagined contacts but they might feel more "normal" and be treated with more civility by the rest of the population. I really think there might be a federal grant possibility here. I will share the directorship with you and you can have all publication rights. |
