Last Night, This Night Last night, In these cooler climes We sat on our deck Counting blessings. Some fifteen robins, parents And babes, Eyed the earth Rain had been that good Earthworms rising Squirrels and a lone rabbit Did not mind our presence Nibbling nuts from Animal-friendly enemies The cardinal watched and sang From the cottonwood. We counted what, one woodpecker, Three bluejays, probably too many Blackbirds, oh what the heck Let ‘em eat. “Look at ‘em go” marveling At their relaxed attitudes This close to a human With one dog, unleashed. Trees were close enough. Besides, Abby’s just a tease. Through dinner, Birds invaded their drinking spots, and Only the Greeks knew What it was to splash In that much freedom. Worms disappeared and bellies Fattened, Corns and peanuts, sunflower seeds All became prime rib. Tonight, we could be out there, But we are in here, The news is on, threats are heard, Realignment in California Is more than a tread change, Even Kansas has its woes There wasn’t enough rain. Saddam continues tyranny And our boys need our prayers Even if they think They are safe, just now. I read today of A mother’s account Regarding her own son’s life “over there” No embellishment required. I know there is more to life Than my back yard. But I thought I would Share it, anyway. |

Indeed you did share it beautifully Karilea.. wish I could have been sitting beside you watching God's creatures. You made me feel as though I were there.. and that's a wonderful thing! Love this snippet of real life. ~Smiles & Hugs, Nancy~ ~ Summer can't be over... |

Karilea I do it too, sit in front of the TV when I could be outside watching a much better show. Maybe tonight...with a bit of insect repellent, I will. |

Well, it's still pretty hot in my backyard, but I wouldn't mind sitting in yours for awhile. This took me to a peaceful place, Karilea. Thank you for that. "Deep inside this armor, the warrior is a child." |

I need some quiet time to reflect and take in some backyard peace. This week I have been running and still can't keep up with my life. Thanks for sharing your backyard thoughts and scenes... Patricia |

Those squirrels look like neat guys to get to know... Thanks for introducing them to us, Karilea! “We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best that we can find in our travels is an honest friend.” –Robert Louis Stevenson |
