Lord, What Have I Done?

I asked you one evening
to let me write to you
a poem of beauty
of happiness so true
in darkness I had lingered
for oh so very long
but in writing every word
I did something horribly wrong
Lord, what have I done?

I worried and I prayed
no word you'd take to heart
that only your friendship
I would only want part
but you took it as I feared
to think that I wanted more
I felt my heart breaking
for I knew what was in store
Lord, what I have done?

I tried to apologize
to say it wasn't true
these words that I spoke of
I never felt for you
the love that I hold inside
is only that of a friend
I did not want to bring
our friendship to an end
Lord, what have I done?

I spent the day in tears
knowing what I had lost
the price for a poem of happiness
you turned out to be the cost
so I sit staring into nothing
asking god "oh lord why?"
knowing I will never get an answer
except only in my mind
Lord, what have I done?
