The Mask

I often recall the day we met.
How our eyes peered into
depths, of one another’s souls
How our spirits reached
through the ether to embrace

I could have sworn I knew you
maybe from some long lost
life once lived
perhaps you were a princess
and I a prince.
or a knight shining in armor
who had ridden a gallant white stallion
to rescue you from tormenting perils
of a medieval dark overlords kingdom

Our fairytale life grew wondrously
as if a universe had been
created for our souls’ intent
heavens angels would sing praise
each day as we awoke and
our hearts longed to be betrothed

We under the crown of secrecy
offered oaths to our love and life
within our journey we became
the envy of all who believed our happiness

Profound revelations in time arose
to form deep wells of insight

This love was not ours
but one of your creation
a delicately woven menagerie
of crystalline illusion
clouded and jaded portrayals of
opaque haunting phantoms

I often reflect upon
those smiles and glittering eyes
the emotional autistic facades
disguised as hidden agendas
kept so well cloaked that only
your vanity would dare perceive
an obscured shimmer of truth
even to the bitter end you
had the audacity to offer
proclamations of heartfelt love
and dear eternal friendship
to the torn psyche of another victim
left to die in the wake of wrath
as you revealed the evil that lurked
behind your porcelain mask
