You said that Hemingway was a bore And all men wore some sort of machismo cloak As if it was an honor to be driven by the idea That you were superior to the weaker sex Which, in need of protection was impressed By such bravado and pretense. I tried to remember how Ernest has described The ritual of bull fighting And knew he thought it a tragedy Like war That could be seen best first hand If one was to understand the brutality And questioned your assessment of him But not of men. I used to cringe at being lumped into the harsh Black white spittle of your pronouncements Yet now I find in many ways the truth of them Is relative to each generality expressed and The total number of elements comprising it That might create variances And open another beer… Or order a round of shots Which by the way are the only ones I pull the trigger on. If I had to say there was one thing That often tore the soft layer of me wanting to bed you From my mind, it was the absolutes so stated For love is a matter of give and take… And when you give me vitriol I take a break from my heart I’ve often wondered for whom the bell tolled And known the island we are is only as isolated As the bridges we burn… I thank Hemingway and you For helping me understand Tequila anyone? It only burns for a little while… Then the fires go numb and there is no bridge to cross between here and the bar [This message has been edited by Cpat Hair (06-19-2003 03:42 PM).] |

If you have read one, you have read them all....Me thinks NOT! Each one, including this one is unique, though very much a part of your style... Just my two cents for one shot of the slow burn and a worm... |

You only think your poems are one and the same. It is the twist in the lime that makes the worm turn... No Sir...we will never tire of your writing. You still manage to keep it unique, and fresh... and filled with the feelings of the day...or of the memories... |

For love is a matter of give and take And when you give me vitriol I take a break from my heart You write romance, you write heat... and you write raw honesty... and you always write excellence. *S* Y'all can have the worm... pour me a shot of Patron, please (no rotgut for this gal... been there, done that... learned! LOL) |

"I tried to remember how Ernest has described The ritual of bull fighting And knew he thought it a tragedy Like war That could be seen best first hand If one was to understand the brutality And questioned your assessment of him But not of men." Geez, I haven't even a word to describe how this poem offhandedly effected my breathing.. but it's so wonderful to read over and over again. |

"I’ve often wondered for whom the bell tolled And known the island we are is only as isolated As the bridges we burn…" I can't say that all your poetry is the same Ron because this is the best of you I've read -- and among the best I've read in a long time -- period ... That tequila is a little too sweet for my taste... can I have a jack instead? |

sheer genius And Ernest was frequently misquoted as well as misunderstood. I do understand, that even as the tequila burns, we crave another shot of life and a chance to feel this kind of heat. keeping this write in my cabinet |

"I tried to remember how Ernest has described The ritual of bull fighting And knew he thought it a tragedy Like war That could be seen best first hand If one was to understand the brutality And questioned your assessment of him But not of men." and "Tequila anyone? It only burns for a little while… Then the fires go numb and there is no bridge to cross between here and the bar" I'd quoted nearly the whole poem before I realized it, so I edited... ![]() Hmmm, let's see...haven't gushed for a while. And besides, ya been gone for what? About a month now I think. ![]() Classic Hair...still my favorite read. I got the next round bud. |

Ron, Skip the tequila, my friend...this poem leaves a slow, but lasting burn in my brain. I have probably read this poem a dozen times since you posted, extracting something new each time. Now I will have a vodka collins, though, just to be sociable. LOL I could tell you again how superb you are, but I don't want to bore you with that...unless you want... Patricia |

Belly-up boys! This rounds on me, the kind that Ron has no need of a trigger, that is. I've never needed to to risk my chitterlings to the gore of a horn to KNOW that I wouldn't like to see my innards spilling into the sand. (no matter how pretty the senoritas). Uhm, make mine a Makers' Mark. The last time I tangled with cactus juice, I ended up barfin' in a barmaids' bedclothes (Feb 13, 1983)or so the story goes.....lol |
