listen to shofar
Diaspora
it calls

it calls you
to introspection
judge yourself

we left Jerusalem
Jews
we left
to a place
we could not
choose

we left Jerusalem
Jews
and now
you offer
refuge

elegance and
beauty
you have these Diaspora

and we could
dwell in thee
but
for thee
better that
the succoth
hold us
in exodus

in exodus
forty years
to wander

we left Jerusalem
Jews
we left
to a place
we could not
choose

forsaken Diaspora
if the jewel
of Israel
with its gardens
and pools
were flung open
we would
go

back
we are
Jews

In reading this
and littlewing's comment
I believe
there will be an answer

how good of you
to introduce Diaspora
to those who
do not know.

I should finish packing, I have no business reading poetry when my move is in progress. LOL, but the PC will be the last thing unplugged and out the door, and the first appliance plugged in tomorrow.
And I am glad I didn't miss this piece.
I've heard the shofar.
I've walked the streets of Jerusalem.
I've touched the wall.
I've climbed Masada.
And yet I remain scattered, a non-Jew by birth who is as much Jew in heart and soul as any other faith and heritage, who has felt and touched and lived Diaspora as a permanent state of existence.
Thank you, Reb, for another thoughtful heart and mindful piece for my library.
