Even as I lie next to you,
knowing that I am secure
Often, I rise from my slumber
walk toward the window,
and watch over my life.

This is my habit,
I've been doing this for so long
I'm accustomed to
listening and watching
for a bump, or shadow.

Anything...

        ...something

That threatens my safety
and my inner peace
that the ghosts of
yesteryear,
wont
      let
         go.

With me,
it's never been
sweet release

                 no...

              ...not at all.

I have clung to life
and it's demons
until I have worn myself
so thin,
that I'm no longer living...

                  but...

               ...simply hanging on.

You turn, and notice
that I am no longer
next to you, and you
call out...

Reluctantly, I return,
but not before...

                    glancing...
                  ...one last time

At the darkness
and the shadows
therein,
that I am trying
to leave behind.

I guess I should've noted that this poem was written for my mother.  For years after her divorce from my father she was unable to sleep at night because she was so in fear of my father and his threats to hurt her for leaving him.

My mother and I have only recently started to talk about this period in her life, and I wrote this after she told me of the many nights she went sleepless, watching and waiting for him to lash out at her.

timothysangel1973 - you're writing is so full of truth and things that seem to follow wherever or whatever we do. I wonder at times if they are ever left behind...

Sunshine, Sue, Kaoru, Janette, and AngelBlueEyes...thank you all for your kind words!

Bill - YES!  I write what I have lived, and I try to help others with my words.  I don't think we ever let go of our pasts...they are the mud forms us.

Tima:

Jesus . . . I do this all the time
(not for the same reasons)
but I do . . .
God . . . wish those bones in
my closet would keep quiet
They keep me up at night

This is brilliant and a wonderful
tribute for your mom and what she must have gone through

I really felt this, Tima! You pulled my harp strings into an old refrain that fortunately  plays less frequently and has now become very faint.

Lovin' hugs,
