You were a giant. When you walked onto the screen everything seemed to be put in proper perspective. I can't even begin to whisper the feeling of how you made me feel how you made me believe how you captured the essence of the best traits of humanity. My hero of the big screen, Gregory Peck, walked off into the clouds last night, quietly, with consumate dignity, the way he did for me when he became Atticus Finch. May all the mockingbirds remember this giant, who has moved onto the final stage. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (06-12-2003 03:14 PM).] |

Kacy, It seems you always know... If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

Larry, this man really was the good giant to me. I can barely hold back the tears as I type. From what I read, he quietly slipped away from this realm, no fanfare, no illness...just moved on to his next stage. Thanks Edder and Karilea. Yes, and we also lost one of our most outstanding newsmen, David Brinkley, who was "in my home" nightly for so many years he seemed to be a permanent fixture. Well, I say enough. No more this year. No more. Our young people will never truly grasp how well Fonda, Cooper, Grant, Stewart, Douglas, and so many other giants of the films came into our presence during the war times, the depression, the good times...all to give us some sense of reality when all around us seemed so dark, and bleak. They worked hard at their craft, just to make us feel better about our lives! What actors and actresses do that today? Ah Kacy...again, thank you. I feel time slipping away... |

Oh, no... I didn't know... about either of them. I saw the title and was hoping you meant something else... but my fears were realized as I read your wonderful tribute. I grew up with Huntley and Brinkley bringing the nightly news into my home... and though To Kill a Mockingbird scared me the first time I saw it, I later counted it among my favorites... right along with Roman Holiday. We've lost a couple of good ones. |

My hubby and I both cried watching the news clip tonight. I just can't believe this legend, this man who helped shape my thoughts on racism through Mockingbird, is gone. What a tremendous loss. And a sad loss too of David Brinkley. Thank you for writing this. Scout will like it. So long old friend .... |

I will remember him for his Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. But I think most people will remember him as you do. Not just a good actor, a good person. Well said. |

Hello Kacy Only this minute did I post a tribute poem to Gregory Peck and then I found this beautiful piece from you. I shed a tear when I read your words as I did when I awoke to the news this morning. He was the finest gentleman and To Kill a Mockingbird is my alltime favourite movie. The world has lost a legend and a fine gentleman. Take care.......Sue I am in motion |

Gregory Peck is, and always will be, my favorite actor. What an incredible talent he had for reaching deep into a person's mind and bringing out wonder. I will miss him, too. |

We have a whole generation of heroes fading before our eyes -- I don't know what bothers me more -- that we're losing the great ones -- or that we, somehow, have to find a way to fill their shoes? Who will be the great statesmen and champions of our age? Who? |

thanks to each of you And to LR: indeed, who are the new giants? It's hard to find ANYONE out here in reality land capable of withstanding the level of scrutiny public figures go through these days. But if you look closely at the screen character of Superman, and the real man Christopher Reeve, you can still find a hero worth emulating. And I know many people who revere Bono of U2, and there are many sports heros who manage to somehow remain untarnished. Not sure about any political heros though. Good Q. Thanks. |
